In the recently held referendum, about 62.47 percent of the country’s voters voted for ‘Yes’ and 29.32 percent voted for ‘No’. Although ‘Yes’ won in most seats, ‘No’ votes won in 11 seats.
Although ‘Yes’ won more than twice as many votes nationwide, an incorrect information came to light when calculating the results published by the Election Commission (EC). Later, the commission corrected it.
The results published initially showed that the casting rate of the referendum in Rajshahi-4 constituency was shown as 244.295 percent. Although the total number of voters in that constituency was 3 lakh 19 thousand 909, the cast votes were shown as 7 lakh 81 thousand 523. There, 6 lakh 12 thousand 229 votes were shown for the ‘No’ vote and 1 lakh 45 thousand 382 votes were shown for the ‘Yes’ vote.
When the discussion on the issue started, the EC later published the revised results. The revised data shows that the casting rate of the referendum in Rajshahi-4 constituency is 72.59 percent. Although the total number of voters has not changed, 26,611 votes were cast. However, the number of ‘no’ and ‘yes’ votes is mentioned as 612,229 and 145,382, respectively.
It is worth noting that Abdul Bari Sardar, the candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was elected as a member of parliament in this constituency.
In addition, the casting rate of the referendum in Sirajganj-1 constituency was initially shown as only 7.899 percent, which is much lower than the voting rate in the parliamentary elections held on the same day. In the national parliamentary elections, 60.83 percent of the votes were cast in that constituency. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Selim Reza was elected there with 116,613 votes.
Later, the revised data showed the voting rate in Sirajganj-1 constituency as 60.83 percent.
Initially, in the referendum held on the implementation of the July Charter, a total of 48 million 74 thousand 429 votes were cast for ‘Yes’ and 22 million 25 million 65 thousand 627 votes were cast for ‘No’ across the country.
